Question about an ultrasound on a thyroid?

I know I can't have the definitive answer until my doctor calls me in two days, but I had a nodule on my thyroid and they had it ultrasounded today, the tech seemed very concerned and marked a lot of spots on the scan (one around one inch around) that she marked with the machine. She also asked me halfway thru if I had a history of thyroid cancer.My boyfriend said if it was something major they would have had called a doctor to come down right away... but I'm still really worried, is that normal procedure for an ultrasound?
