Who thinks that atheists are incapable of expressing condolences?

Why do we have to ert Christian's belief in the afterlife to express our sadness for the loss of their loved one? I'm happy when my friends express their sympathy by showing their love for me and saying anything they want to express their sorrow for my loss. Why is this not enough for some people?
