Does society have trouble believing a woman can be violent/commit a crime?

It seems whenever a woman commits a violent or hell any crime, there are always multitudes of excuses made, She was abused, she was forced and coerced into it, she has a mental disorder.. etc. Why does society have trouble accepting that women can commit violence too?
