In coneecticut (or any state in new england) what time of year are you able to catch crayfish?

I live in connecticut and when i was a kid i used to catch crayfish in a brook behind a school. i haven't been there in about twenty years and went to see if i could find any there yesterday and was not able to find any. it used to be you flip over a rock and there would be 2 or 3 of them. there has been a lot of development over the years and i am guessing that is why. i did find one red spotted newt that looked to have been killed by a crayfish. it was missing two legs and had a small chunk taken out of its belly.
