When writing keys, I usually start with a spreadsheet, listing the organisms on one edge and the characteristics on the other. Then, try to divide the organisms in half on the basis of one of the characters. This would be your first dicotomy. Keep dividing the organisms until you get to single ones. You're lucky in that you can make up the characteristics; I have to stick with the ones that evolved in real animals. Don't take the word "half" literally; you may want to start by separating the plants from the animals.
